By Instagram audience size

Most businesses without a website are small accounts. The need for a site is not a function of audience size; it is a function of taking orders by hand.

Methodology

Profiles are discovered through Instagram's hashtag and location surfaces and through Google Maps listings that show a phone number and no website button. For each candidate the public bio, link, category and recent posts are read. A profile enters the pool only if it shows a real business and its link passes the no-website rule: empty, or pointing at a link-in-bio tool, a messaging app, a marketplace, an ordering or booking tool, a hosted shop subdomain or another social network. Any domain the business owns disqualifies it; a parked or unregistered domain does not. Unknown domains are fetched and classified before a decision is made.

An AI classifier assigns each profile a business type and a location from the public text. Profiles are re-checked on a schedule: a business that launches a website, goes private or stops posting is removed from the active counts. The figures above therefore describe currently active businesses, not everything ever seen. Counts exclude profiles the classifier judged not to be a business. The full rule set is described in how to tell if a business has a website.

Limits of the data

  • Coverage follows discovery. Hashtags and locations that have been searched more are better represented, which is why food businesses and English-speaking markets lead.
  • Country and city are inferred from public profile text and are missing for a share of profiles; those are excluded from the geographic tables but included in the total.
  • The pool is a sample of Instagram businesses without a website, not a census. Use the proportions with more confidence than the absolute counts.

Frequently asked questions

How many businesses without a website does NoSite track?
As of 2026-09-21, NoSite lists 35,466 active businesses that sell on Instagram and own no website, the largest share in India (7,456). The figure is live and grows every day as new profiles pass the no-website check.
What counts as having no website in these statistics?
A business is counted only if its profile link is empty or points to a link-in-bio tool, a messaging app, a marketplace, an ordering or booking tool, a hosted shop subdomain or another social network. A domain the business owns disqualifies it, even if the site is poor. A parked or unregistered domain still counts as no website.
Where does the data come from?
Public Instagram business profiles discovered through hashtags and locations, plus Google Maps listings with a phone number and no website button. Only public profile fields are read. Business type and location are assigned by an AI classifier and can be filtered in the catalog.
Can I cite or republish these figures?
Yes. Cite the page URL and the date you read it, since the numbers change daily. Attribution as 'NoSite, Businesses Without a Website statistics' with a link to this page is appreciated and is all that is asked.
